The eligibility criteria for the NDIS are as follows:

Age Requirement

The individual must be under 65 years of age when they first apply to join the NDIS.

Residency Status

The applicant must be:

  • An Australian citizen, OR
  • Hold a Permanent Visa, OR
  • Be a Protected Special Category Visa holder.

Location

The individual must live in an area where the NDIS is available.

Disability Requirement:

  • The person must have a permanent disability that significantly affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. This includes intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive, and psychosocial disabilities.
  • The disability must be likely to be lifelong.

Early Intervention Requirements

Sometimes, individuals who may benefit from early intervention support can qualify. This is to reduce their future needs for support. The criteria are:

  • The individual has a disability or condition that is likely to become a permanent disability.
  • The individual is a child under 6 years of age with developmental delay and the early intervention supports are likely to reduce the need for future support.
